A midnight petition at the dark of the moon: two candles, a sealed jar, three strokes of a bell, and hounds set to watch a crossing. It asks Hecate for justice after real harm and for nothing further to come through your door.

What You Will Need

One black and one red candle

Black set to the left, red to the right, each lit with its own opening line. The arrangement is part of the rite and should not be improvised.

Paper and a black pen

For the name of the person who did the harm. The name alone, folded three times.

A small jar with a lid

To hold the folded name, the ash and the offering. It is sealed and then either stored or buried.

Incense ash

From a stick burned down beforehand, or from your censer. A spoon's worth, into the jar.

An offering for Hecate

Garlic, honey, dark bread, eggs or a coin. It goes into the jar or beside it, and nothing from it comes back to your table.

A bell

Any bell with a clear note. Rung three times and not after.

Moon Phase & Timing

This rite names its own hour and phase, and both are requirements rather than preferences.

Dark of the Moon: Hecate's night. A petition of this weight is not made at any other phase.

Midnight: The hour named in the rite. Midnight is itself a crossing, which is the shape of the whole working.

An actual crossroads, if you can: Not required - an altar, a doorway or a hallway crossing serves - but if you have somewhere safe and legal where two paths meet, the rite is noticeably stronger there.
