Hecate's Supper at the Hidden Threshold

Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
The old monthly offering, kept at the new moon: the house swept clean, a plate set down at a crossing, and guidance asked for the month not yet walked. The deipnon in its simplest honest form - one lunar cycle closed, and the next one met with a clear floor.
Level Intermediate
Time An hour, including the sweeping
Moon The night of the new moon
What You Will Need
A plate or shallow bowl
For the offering. One you are content to leave outside overnight, or to carry back in and wash if you are working at a doorway.
A simple food offering
Eggs, garlic, bread or small cakes are the traditional ones for Hecate. Plain and unfussy. The plate is set down for her and nothing from it comes back to your table.
One black or white candle
Lit at the threshold. Black for the dark of the moon, white for the clear floor - either is right.
Incense, if you want it
Optional. A stick at the threshold alongside the candle.
A broom and your ordinary cleaning things
The sweeping is the first half of the rite, not the preparation for it. Use what you actually clean with.
A crossroads, doorway or hallway crossing
Where the plate is set down. A place where paths meet, however small - the junction of two hallways counts.
Moon Phase & Timing
This rite is fixed to the calendar. It is the night the month turns over.
The new moon: The named night, and the only one for this rite. In the Greek reckoning the deipnon was given on the last day of the lunar month, as the old month ended.
After dark: Set the plate down once it is dark. The pause in the new moon's darkness is a step of the rite rather than atmosphere.
Monthly: The point of it. One cycle closed and the next met, twelve or thirteen times a year. A single deipnon is a gesture; the habit is the practice.
