What You Will Need
A clean, flat surface
A shelf, small table, windowsill, or dedicated corner. This will become your ancestral altar — a permanent or semi-permanent space in your home.
A white cloth
A clean napkin, handkerchief, or piece of white fabric to cover the surface. White represents purity, peace, and the spirit world.
A glass of fresh water
Placed at the center of the altar. Water is the universal offering across nearly all ancestral traditions — it refreshes and sustains the spirits.
A white candle
Placed beside or behind the water. The flame serves as a beacon that guides your ancestors' attention to the altar and your prayers.
Fresh flowers
Any flowers you can find — from a garden, a grocery store, or even wildflowers. They represent beauty, impermanence, and the cycle of life and death.
A piece of bread or small plate of food
A simple offering of sustenance. Bread works universally, but you may also offer a food your ancestors loved in life.
A photograph or written names
If you have photos of deceased loved ones, place them on the altar. If not, write their names on a piece of paper. If you do not know their names, write 'my ancestors' — they will hear you.
Moon Phase & Timing
Ancestral healing is ongoing work. While any time is appropriate, certain moments deepen the connection.
Full Moon: The veil between worlds is thinnest at the full moon. Messages, feelings, and healing energy travel more easily in both directions.
Dark Moon: The quietest night of the lunar cycle. Deep listening and ancestral communication happen most naturally in this stillness.
Anniversaries and Holidays: Birthdays, death anniversaries, and cultural holidays honoring the dead (Dia de los Muertos, Samhain, Obon, Qingming) are powerful times to tend the altar.
