The Casting of Lots

Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
The plainest divination there is, and the oldest: three marked tokens shaken in a closed hand and dropped, read for yes, no and not yet — then a book taken blind off the shelf and opened at random for the sentence that says why. No cards to learn, no symbols to memorise, nothing to buy.
Level Beginner
Time 15 minutes, and two of those are the question
Moon Any. The dark of the moon for questions about what is hidden.
What You Will Need
Three flat tokens you can mark on both sides
Three coins, three cardboard discs, three flat pebbles, three buttons, three slices of a twig. They must be able to land one way up or the other, and they must be identical to each other so no one of them is the important one.
A marker, paint or a knife
To put a cross on one face of each token and leave the other face blank. That is the entire system: three marked faces, three blank ones, and four possible answers.
A small bag or a cupped hand
Something to shake them in. A drawstring pouch, a sock, a teacup turned over, or just both palms closed together.
A cloth to cast onto
Any cloth, laid flat on a table or the floor. It keeps the tokens from rolling away and it marks out where the casting happens, which is the only ceremony this working has.
A book you have read
Not a sacred text unless one is already yours. A novel you love, a book of poems, a field guide, a dictionary. It has to be one whose sentences are worth landing on, which is why a book you have read beats a book you have been meaning to.
A notebook
To write the question, the cast and the sentence. Without the writing this is a party trick; with it, it is a practice, because the value of lots is almost entirely in reading back the ones you cast six months ago.
Moon Phase & Timing
Lots are the least fussy divination in the library and work in any phase, but the sky does colour what they are good for.
Dark of the Moon: For questions about what is being kept from you, or about something you suspect but cannot prove.
Full Moon: For questions about a decision you have already half made, where the clearest answer is the most useful one.
Any time, honestly: This is the working to use at the kitchen table at eleven at night. Three tokens and a book is a complete divinatory system and it does not need the right night.
