The Compass Without North

A magnet held near a compass while a name is spoken: the needle swings, and the working asks that somebody heading somewhere careless should hesitate long enough to look up. Lift the stone and the needle comes back, which is also how the working is undone.
What You Will Need
A compass
A cheap field compass or a keyring one. It needs a needle you can watch swing, so a phone app will not do this working.
A magnet or magnetic stone
A fridge magnet, a lodestone, a magnetised nail. Strong enough to move the needle from a few inches away.
Incense
Any kind, in a holder. It is lit at the start and burned right down, and the smoke is the second half of the working's imagery.
A still, quiet room
Still air specifically - no fan, no open window - so the smoke hangs rather than streams. This matters more than it sounds.
Moon Phase & Timing
No phase is required. The conditions in the room are the real timing here.
Waning Moon: For slowing something already in motion.
Wednesday: Mercury's day, which rules travel, decisions and directions. A neat fit for a working about a path.
Any still evening: The common use. Pick a night when the house is quiet and the air is not moving.
