Love Spells
The Hearth-Friend Charm
Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A working for friendship rather than romance: two threads from two households, a shared flame and a plain list of what the person actually is to you, tied into a charm that lives by your door. Every other love spell in this library assumes a lover. This one is for the people who turn up.
What You Will Need
A thread or thin ribbon from your own home
Pulled from a garment you wear often, a tea towel, a blanket, the hem of something. About eighteen inches. It matters that it comes from your house and not from a shop.
A thread from theirs, or something that stands in for it
Best is a thread from something they gave you or left behind. Failing that, a strand of ribbon from a present they wrapped, a loose stitch from a borrowed jumper, or a length of the same colour as their front door. Honesty beats purity here - name the substitution out loud when you use it.
A third thread in yellow or gold
Yellow is the colour of friendship in nearly every system that bothers to distinguish it from love. This is the strand that is neither of you - the thing you have in common, the shared joke, the reason you met.
One candle for the two of you
Not two candles. Yellow, orange or white. One flame that both threads pass over, because the point of the working is the shared hearth rather than two linked ones.
A written list
On a small piece of paper, in your own hand: three to five plain things this person is to you. Not compliments - functions. “Tells me when I am wrong.” “Answers the phone at midnight.” “Knows what my mother is like.” This is the part of the charm that does the work.
Dried rosemary and a pinch of dried thyme
Rosemary for remembrance, thyme for courage and for the long haul. A pinch of each, scattered on the paper. Both are kitchen herbs, and that is appropriate to a working about the kind of love that happens in kitchens.
A small ring, washer or key
Something with a hole through it, to tie the finished braid onto. A curtain ring, a spare key, a washer from a drawer.
Moon Phase & Timing
Friendship works on the growing moon like any other kind of love, but it is slower and it is less fussy about timing.
Waxing Moon: For a friendship you want more of - someone new, someone you have been meaning to get back to, someone who has just moved near.
Friday: Venus's day, which governs affection of every kind and not only the romantic sort. Any Friday will do if the moon is wrong.
Full Moon: For a friendship that is already old and good, and that you simply want to honour. No asking, just a charm made and hung up.
