The Hourglass Working

Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A goal tied to a date you chose yourself. Two jars of salt, one full and one empty, and a level spoon of it moved across every morning until the day arrives. The other timed workings in this library run on the moon's calendar or on a fixed seven nights; this one runs on yours, whether that is eleven days away or ninety.
Level Intermediate
Time 40 minutes to set up, one minute every morning after
Moon Start on a New or Waxing Moon if you can; the date matters more
What You Will Need
Two identical jars or glasses
Clear, the same as each other, standing side by side. Sameness matters: you want to be able to see at a glance how far through you are, and two different vessels make that a guess.
Coarse salt, enough to fill one of them
Or dry rice, or dry sand, or lentils. Something that pours and that you have a lot of. One jar starts full and one starts empty.
A small spoon that lives beside the jars
The same spoon every day. It is a tool now, not a teaspoon from the drawer, and it stays with the working.
The goal and the date, written on one slip
One sentence and one date, in that order. “The portfolio is finished and sent — 14 March.” The date must be a real one you picked for a real reason, not a round number of weeks.
One candle for the setting-up, one for the day itself
Two candles of the same colour, chosen for the goal. The second one is put away unlit and not touched until the date.
A pinch of a dried herb that suits the goal
Mint for money, rosemary for study and clear thinking, bay for ambition, thyme for stamina. It goes into the full jar at the start and crosses over a grain at a time with everything else.
Moon Phase & Timing
This working deliberately ignores the lunar calendar once it starts, because its clock is the date on the slip. The moon only chooses the morning you begin.
New Moon: The cleanest start, and the one that makes the first morning feel like a beginning.
Waxing Moon: Fine, and the usual compromise. Anything up to the full moon is a growing sky to begin a growing count under.
Any morning at all: If the date is close, start tomorrow. A working with eleven mornings in it still has eleven mornings, and waiting for the new moon can cost you four of them.
