The Mending Jar

Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A jar made for somebody who is ill or mending, tended every day for as long as it takes. Nothing in it is taken or applied: it is a vigil you can hold in your hands, for the stretch of time when there is nothing useful left to do and still too much to feel.
Level Beginner
Time 30 minutes to build, then a minute a day for as long as needed
Moon Begin on a Waxing Moon; no need to finish on any particular night
What You Will Need
A clean glass jar with a lid
Small enough to close one hand around. A jam jar, a spice jar. It will be picked up every day, so choose one that is pleasant to hold rather than one that is beautiful on a shelf.
A smooth stone that fits in your palm
River stone, beach pebble, or something from a garden. This is the body in the jar - the part of the working that stands for the person. Pick it up and decide it feels right before you use it.
Dried rosemary
For remembrance, and because it is in most kitchens. A teaspoon is plenty, loose in the jar around the stone.
Dried lavender or chamomile flowers
For rest, which is most of what mending actually is. Either, or both. If all you have is a lavender sachet from a drawer, cut it open.
A short written line
On a scrap of paper: the person's name, and one sentence of what you want for them. Not a diagnosis and not a bargain. “Let her sleep through the night” is a better line than “let her be cured”, because you will read it again tomorrow.
A white or pale blue candle
Lit while you build the jar, and not needed again afterwards. A tea light is fine.
Moon Phase & Timing
Illness does not keep to the calendar, so build this whenever it is needed. The moon only sets the tone of the first night.
Waxing Moon: The usual beginning. Strength returning as the light returns, which is the shape you are asking for.
Full Moon: Good for the night you build it if the person is at their worst. Full light for the hardest part, and the wane afterwards carries the illness out rather than the strength.
Any night at all: If somebody is ill tonight, tonight is the right night. A working begun late beats one timed perfectly and never made.
