The Nightmare Jar
Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A jar for under the bed, built to catch what comes in the night: salt, thorn, a black stone and the dream itself written down and shut away. The dream spells in this library all open the gate wider. This one is the only one that closes it a little, for the weeks when what arrives is not worth reading.
What You Will Need
A jar with a lid, small enough to slide under a bed
Short rather than tall, so it does not go over when it is pushed. A squat spice jar or a baby-food jar is close to ideal.
Coarse salt
Enough to half-fill the jar. The oldest boundary there is, and the only material in this working that does not need explaining to anyone.
A thorn, or a sprig of something thorned
Blackthorn or hawthorn traditionally; a rose stem with the thorns left on is what most people will actually have. One good thorn is enough. It is pointing outward, not inward.
A black stone
Obsidian, onyx, black tourmaline, or a dark pebble off a beach. Its job is to be the heaviest and darkest thing in the jar, so a free stone that genuinely looks the part beats a bought one that does not.
A written account of the dream
On a scrap of paper, in the plainest words you can manage - what happened, who was in it, what it felt like at the worst moment. If the dreams are different every night, write the thing they have in common instead.
A dark candle, or no candle at all
Black, deep blue or grey if you have one. This is a working done at the end of the day and there is no shame in doing it by the bedside lamp.
A pin or needle
For piercing the paper once, before it goes in.
Moon Phase & Timing
This is a working of refusal, so the waning moon suits it - but nightmares do not wait for the calendar and neither should this.
Waning Moon: The proper time. The light is going out of the sky and you are asking for something to go out of your nights.
Dark of the Moon: The strongest night for a jar meant to hold something, and the right one if the dreams have been going on for months rather than days.
Tonight: If you are reading this because of last night, build it tonight. A jar made out of season beats three good nights of sleep you did not get while waiting for the moon.
