The Pain Drawing Poultice

Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A warm cloth bundle laid over a place that hurts, with the herbs sewn inside it rather than against the skin, and a stone set on top to take the ache into itself. The healing spells in this library are for grief, vitality and distant sending. This one is for an hour on a Tuesday evening when your back will not let you sit down.
Level Intermediate
Time 20 minutes to make, 20 minutes to lie still
Moon Waning Moon, for drawing out
What You Will Need
Two squares of cotton cloth and a needle and thread
Six inches square, from an old pillowcase or tea towel. Sewn into a flat pouch so that nothing inside it ever touches skin. Cotton because it holds warmth and washes.
Dried rosemary, dried lavender and dried comfrey or plantain leaf
A tablespoon of each, loose inside the pouch. Rosemary for circulation, lavender for the tension that pain builds around itself, comfrey or plantain for the old folk reputation in drawing workings. If you have only the first two, use only the first two.
Coarse salt
A tablespoon in the pouch with the herbs. Salt holds heat longer than herbs do and it is the part of the bundle that does the drawing.
A dark stone that fits the palm
Haematite, obsidian, basalt, or a dark pebble. It sits on top of the pouch, not under it. Its job is to be the thing the ache goes into, and it is rinsed afterwards.
A bowl of hot water
For warming the pouch. Hot from the tap or boiled and left to stand - hot enough to warm the bundle through, never hot enough to be uncomfortable against skin. Test it on the inside of your wrist first, every time.
A dry towel
To wrap the warmed pouch in, so the heat arrives gently and the skin stays dry.
A dark blue or white candle
Lit at the start and snuffed at the end, so the twenty minutes has a beginning and an end rather than drifting.
Moon Phase & Timing
This is a drawing-out rather than a building-up, so it follows the moon downward. Pain, though, arrives on its own schedule.
Waning Moon: The proper time. Something is being taken away, and the sky is doing the same.
Dark of the Moon: For long-standing pain that has been there for months. The deepest draw, and the right night to begin a run of several evenings.
Tonight: If it hurts tonight. A working done in the wrong phase and an evening of lying still beats a perfectly timed one next fortnight.
