The Secondhand Stripping

For anything that came to you already owned: an inherited ring, a charity-shop coat, furniture from a house clearance, a knife from a grandmother you did not like. Four passes - salt, smoke, cold water and sunlight - that take somebody else's wear off an object without taking its history, and then give it your name.
What You Will Need
The object itself
One at a time, however tempting it is to do the whole box. If it is too big to move - a wardrobe, a table - the working is done on it where it stands and the water pass becomes a wiped cloth.
Coarse salt
A small bowl of it. For the first pass, where the object is buried or packed rather than sprinkled.
Something to burn: rosemary, sage, cedar or plain incense
Whatever smoke you actually have. A stick of incense does this job perfectly well and the house smells better for it.
Cold running water
A tap is fine. Not warm - cold, and running rather than standing. Some objects must not go near water at all, and for those the cloth version is the whole of this pass.
A clean cloth of your own
One that belongs to your household and has been washed in your machine. This is the first thing of yours the object meets.
A sunny windowsill or an outside step
Two to four hours of daylight. Overcast counts; it is daylight rather than heat that is doing this.
A white candle, for the naming at the end
Lit once the object is dry and back in the house.
Moon Phase & Timing
This working has two halves and they want different moons, which is why it is usually spread over two days rather than one.
Waning Moon: The stripping - salt, smoke, water, sun. Everything in the first half is a removal, and the waning moon is when removals go easily.
New or Waxing Moon: The naming. Claiming an object is a beginning, so it is better done as the light comes back, even if that means leaving the thing on the windowsill for a few days in between.
Any bright morning: If the object is making the room feel wrong now, strip it now. The moon is the preference and the discomfort is the instruction.
