The Thorn Beneath the Rose
Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A rose working for a sweetness that turned out to be false. The bloom falls away, the thorn is what remains, and your anger is set down on the paper and burned rather than carried another week.
What You Will Need
A single rose with its thorns left on
Any colour; a dark red or a deep purple suits the working. Do not strip the stem. The thorns are half the point and you are meant to feel them.
A black candle
A taper is plenty. It is lit at the start and snuffed at the end.
A piece of parchment or plain paper, and a pen
Small - a palm's width. It has to fold around a stem and then burn.
A fireproof container
A metal bowl, a cauldron, a heavy ashtray. On a surface that does not mind heat.
A pinch of black salt
Bought or made from fire ash and salt. It goes into the cooled remains at the end to close the working.
Moon Phase & Timing
This is a setting-down working, so it belongs to the half of the month when things are let go of.
Waning Moon: The usual time. What was sweet is allowed to fall away as the light does.
Friday: Venus's day, which rules roses and love both. Fitting for a working about affection that proved false, and it gives the rite a sharper edge.
Any night you are angry enough to do it properly: This one wants real feeling behind it. A bored rose working is just a tidy fire.
