The Wayfarer's Ward
Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
A ward made for a journey rather than a house: a stone from your own doorstep, salt, iron and the destination written out, tied small enough to live in a glovebox or the bottom of a bag. The library has twenty-four protective workings and every one of them guards somewhere you are standing still.
What You Will Need
A small stone from your own doorstep or garden
Picked up from the ground you actually live on. Not bought, not pretty, not chosen for its properties - chosen because it is from home. Small enough to close your hand over.
A pinch of salt and a pinch of dried rosemary
Salt for the boundary you are carrying with you, rosemary for remembering the way back. A pinch of each is the whole quantity.
Something iron, very small
A single nail, a safety pin, a steel washer, the broken-off tooth of a key. Iron is the oldest travelling protection in Europe and the reason horseshoes went over doors and under cart seats alike.
A square of cloth and a length of thread
Four inches of any cloth you already own - a cut corner of an old shirt is ideal, because it has been with you. Thread or string to tie it.
The destination, written
On a scrap of paper: where you are going, and the date you mean to be back. Writing the return is the part that matters; a ward for a journey is really a ward for the coming home.
A candle, any colour
Lit for the tying and put out afterwards. This is a working done the night before, usually in a hurry, and it survives being done in a hurry.
Moon Phase & Timing
Travel does not wait for the moon, and a ward made the night before beats one timed perfectly for a trip you have already left on.
Waxing Moon: For a journey toward something - a move, a new job, a first visit. The light grows while you are away.
Waning Moon: For a journey away from something, including the ones nobody wants to take. Protection on the road out.
The night before, whatever the moon: The real timing. Pack the ward with the bag, not after it.
