The Witch's Bottle

Join the Coven to keep this in your own Book of Shadows
The oldest protective working in English folk magic, set down as it was found: a sealed bottle of pins, iron, salt and something of your own, buried at the boundary of the house to catch what is sent against it. Unlike a jar you keep and tend, this one goes into the ground and is never opened again.
Level Intermediate
Time 40 minutes, plus the burying
Moon Waning Moon, or the dark of the moon
What You Will Need
A glass bottle with a cork or screw lid
Small and thick-walled. A spice jar, a little apothecary bottle, or a stoneware vessel if you have one. It must seal completely, because nothing is meant to come out of it again.
Iron pins, nails or needles
A dozen or so. Bent nails are traditional. These are the teeth of the working: what is sent at you catches on them instead of on you.
Coarse salt
Enough to fill the bottle a third of the way. Salt is the oldest boundary there is.
Something of your own
Nail clippings, a few hairs from your brush, or a thread pulled from a garment you wear often. This is what tells the bottle whose house it is guarding. The historical bottles used urine, and you are welcome to be as literal as you like.
Dried rosemary and a sprig of thorn
Rosemary for remembrance and warding, blackthorn or hawthorn if you can get it, bramble if you cannot. A rose stem with the thorns left on will do.
Red thread
A length long enough to wind three times around the neck of the bottle.
Black or red wax
A candle stub is fine. For sealing the lid so the bottle is shut for good.
Moon Phase & Timing
This is a working of refusal rather than of drawing, so it is made as the moon lets go of its light.
Waning Moon: The usual time. As the light withdraws, so does whatever has been reaching toward your house.
Dark of the Moon: The strongest night for it, and the most uncomfortable. Choose this if something specific has already started and you want it stopped rather than slowed.
Saturday: Saturn's day, which governs walls, limits and what is not allowed past. If you cannot match the moon, match the day.
