Ophiel
Governor of Mercury
Ophiel is the governour of such things as are attributed to Mercury: his Character is this. His Spirits are 100000 Legions: he easily giveth Familiar Spirits: he teacheth all Arts: and he that is dignified with his Character, he maketh him to be able in a moment to convert Quicksilver into the Philosophers stone.
The Arbatel was first printed in Latin at Basel in 1575, and its seventh aphorism names the seven Olympic Spirits who govern the world between them. The passage here is Robert Turner's English translation, printed in London in 1655. The long s of the original is set as a plain s; nothing else is changed.
Arbatel of Magick, translated by Robert Turner, in Henry Cornelius Agrippa's Fourth Book of Occult Philosophy (London, 1655). The text and the characters are in the public domain.
The character is traced from the page of the 1655 printing on which it stands.
In the book the character stands between the account of what the governor does and the count of his court.
The book lists the provinces as 49, 42, 35, 28, 21, 14 and 7, then gives the total as 186. Those figures add to 196. The discrepancy is in the book, not here.
